First Book Review

When Calls The Heart Book Series. Written by Janette Oke

Books 1 to 4 only

I picked this series to do my first book review as they were favorites of mine as a teenager, making them very familiar to me. I recently re-read them and I was surprised to find them relevant to my life once again. There are books that feel like coming home when you go back to them, these are that way for me.

These are faith-based books set in the Canadian Western Frontier. The Canadian Mounted Police are established and trusted in this setting. Descriptions of the natural beauty transport the reader to the surroundings. The main character is well developed as are the supporting characters.

Events are very realistic and not romanticized in the way one might expect. Throughout all the books, the frontier is related as a place of survival, conditions are harsh and inflexible. There are places I personally had wished the storyline would take the characters that would have been unrealistic. Characters follow their own course of action that does not necessarily end happily, nor do things always turn out how they wish. That component of human nature shapes the characters, their interactions and development.

As a lover of nature, these books check many boxes for me. At times, the faith-based component is also comforting and relatable for myself. The themes changed in relatability based on my own maturity and viewpoints. And in the middle of chaotic family life, these are a decently easy read.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to read my review. I read books in many genres as well as varying subjects. Check back soon!
